Mark 1:1-11
SMAS 10.30 Morning Worship

In a small mining village, a stranger walked into the pub. After obtaining a drink and sitting down, he noticed another man sitting in the corner. This man had the flattest head he had ever seen and cauliflower ears. He asked one of the other locals about this and was quickly encouraged to say nothing against the strange-looking man.

It transpired that there had been a roof-fall in the pit and in order to let the miners escape safely this strange-looking man had taken the whole weight of the roof on his head to prevent it from falling.

Ephesians 2:8-22 & Mark 3:13-19
SMAS 10.30am Service

I wonder if you realise what a big statement Jesus was making when He chose twelve disciples? The people of Israel were a family, tracing their ancestry back to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jacob had had twelve sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Issachar, Asher, Gad, Zebulun and Dan. The Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible places special emphasis on the Twelve and their calling to be God’s chosen people.

Often when I give lifts to people, most likely to Addenbrookes they comment on the way I go, usually saying ‘you can tell you’re from London’ as I zigzag in and out of various side roads. Well, yes it’s true, I am from London and that has shaped my driving considerably but there’s something that shapes it even more. I cannot bear wasting time. Time, for me is the most precious of commodities and woe betide anyone or anything that tries to waste the little I have. Hence you may have already gathered I don’t do small talk. If you have to phone me don’t start with ‘how are you’? Waste of time – cut to the chase. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Trouble is though - I don’t think God works like this.

Remember that God made a good world and He made us to love us and for us to love Him. All about relationships. People ruined this by sin, doing things their own way. Selfishness. sIn being selfish, is a very bad thing. It causes hurt, not just to God, but to others. It had to be punished and the punishment that came into the world was death.

Who is Jesus?

Colossians 1:15-20 John 14:5-9
2nd Sunday of Lent
SMAS 10.30am Morning Worship

Today we’re going to look at the question: Who is Jesus?
Note though that I’m going to look at who He is, not what He did. Which is as difficult talking to you about Barak Obama without telling you he’s the US president!

Whenever I delve into the Bible I’m always struck by a great sense of excitement, what am I going to discover? I hope you might feel the same? As we think about Who is Jesus? You might think ‘Oh no, I know this! Switch off mode. Don’t ! This is the reason John wrote His gospel – people were beginning to think they knew ALL about this Jesus. But they had begun to think their own thoughts and were getting it wrong!
