Jeremiah 31:31-33, Philippians 3:10-14 & 17-21 & Luke 4:16-21

What’s the idea behind a Covenant Service at the beginning of a New Year? A covenant is a promise between two people (or parties). There are many covenants in the Bible, mostly between God and people. Covenants are how God enters into a lasting relationship with people: important because we were created to be in a relationship with Him.

Sometimes covenants are conditional, (I will be their God if they will be my people) sometimes unconditional (Noahic – God’s grace will be upon all people). Christians have been brought into a relationship with God by means of a covenant that is grounded in the person, work, and blood of Christ.

Who is wisest at Epiphany

Matthew 2:1-12
Epiphany
(6-1-2013)

At Christmas we heard that beautiful passage from the beginning of John’s Gospel that says ‘the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it’.

Sometimes, in some really dark times, it can appear that darkness has triumphed. Sometimes a glimpse of the news, an advert for a film or a TV programme may be enough to begin feelings of despair at what the world is coming to. Is the light really still there shining in the darkness?

I guess that the wise men may have had feelings like that as they followed the star. It must surely have gone cloudy and dark sometimes in their epic journey. We don’t know, we can’t even imagine what their journey was like as it would have been something so very alien to us in these days of instant information and instant travel not to mention Sat Navs and Google Maps – with or without the latest iPhone OS!

Prologue to John’s Gospel

We can sometimes hear familiar things and not pay much attention to them can’t we. I mentioned to one of our music group yesterday that I never know whether to class ‘Away in the manger’ as a 3 or 6 verse carol. She just said ‘hmmm’ at the time but later came back to me and said, ‘do you know, all the years I’ve been playing that carol I never noticed that it was the same tune repeated twice in each verse. I remember too, not that long ago suddenly realizing why ‘Eeyore’ (in Winnie-the-Pooh’ is called ‘Eeyore’ – because he’s a donkey (hee-haw!)

That reading that we just heard read from John’s gospel has some similarities with this. It’s a reading we hear often - at least every Christmas anyway - and yet there is probably a lot of it that goes over our heads. John’s Gospel my favourite - its the one that goes into depth and this passage, the Prologue, is no exception. It is a summary of John’s Gospel.

Luke 2:41 - 52
1st Sunday of Christmas
SMAS 10.30am
(30-12-12)

It’s very frustrating when we lose something. Linda began her talk for this morning with a story about how she lost her jacket last year. She did mention that one of the reasons that she wanted to introduce the subject of the loss of her new olive green waterproof was that she may have left it in your house and that you would now know to whom that unidentified jacket belongs to and Linda will, as a result, be reunited with her jacket.

However, Linda goes on to note that when we lose something we do the obvious actions of retracing our steps until we find it. Linda says: “I couldn’t do that because I don’t remember losing it and wouldn’t have a clue where to start. The first I knew about it was when I needed it. I now know the best thing to do is to put your car keys in a pocket before taking it off so you can’t leave without it. Too late now though!”
